Year 6 have been working extremely hard this week on their portraits of inspirational people who have campaigned for what they believe in. The pupils have applied the sketching skills they have practised in art lessons and the portraits are looking really effective. These will feature in a calendar celebrating influential people.
During Science Week, Year 6 investigated ‘How does exercise affect our heart rate?’ The pupils worked in groups and devised an experiment which would answer this question. They needed to make a prediction, decide how they would ensure it would be a fair test, record results and evaluate their findings.
Year 6 had an amazing World Book Day this year… we based the day around the Lewis Carroll poem ‘The Jabberwocky’. The pupils dissected the poem then rehearsed it ready to perform for the Year 4 pupils. The children showed confidence and courage when reading aloud and even included actions. We also created some amazing artwork of the weird and wonderful creatures in the poem using watercolours.
On Friday morning, Years Five and Six were visited by Doncaster North’s MP, Ed Miliband. Following their learning about the civil rights movement, gender inequality and wealth inequality, the children had the chance to ask their local MP questions about his career and learn about his role in government. The children prepared questions and asked about his success and challenges; his ideas for how to help Doncaster and the country; his priorities as per his role in the current government cabinet.
Mr Miliband also took the time to learn about the children’s current expedition with Y5/6 reeling off their favourite facts from ‘Fights for your Rights’. Thank you to Ed for taking the time out of his busy diary to visit us!
Year 6 have signed up to Lego’s Build the Change challenge! The children must work in teams to design and create built spaces for specific people and purposes. There first challenge is to design and make a party space suitable for a specific person with specific needs. We have been incredibly impressed with the pupils’ great teamwork and their creative ideas when designing.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of taking a team of swimmers to a Legacy Sport competition at Askern Leisure Centre. Our children were amazing, bringing home a range of gold, silver and bronze medals in breast stroke, front crawl and back stroke. The team spirt and support for each other was what makes our children so special. A huge well done to all involved!
Year 6 spent hook week looking at light and the eye. We discovered how light travels in science lessons before moving onto our focus artist: M.C. Escher. This artist was famous for drawing an image of his own eye so we sketched our own eyes in the same style. The pupils then critiqued each others’ work and completed a second draft. They were extremely proud of the outcomes!
Year 6 have been busy constructing their Solar System models this week. They have been practising the skills of sawing wood and joining materials with a hammer and nails. The models are coming along nicely and the pupils can’t wait to show them off during their presentation of learning.
Year 6 have been enjoying their Sing Up music sessions this half term. Today, we learned how to keep a strong, steady beat using cups whilst singing What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor.
Year 6 had an amazing crew week focused on the guiding question: How can we get everyone to the top of the mountain? Take a look at our fantastic artwork including all the qualities that the children think they will need to succeed in Year 6.
