Year Six Conquers Maths Week England Challenges 🧮

Last week marked an exciting and stimulating time for the Year Six as they participated in Maths Week England 2023. The week-long celebration of all things mathematical brought forth a plethora of challenges, fostering a spirit of friendly competition and collaborative problem-solving.

One of the highlights of the week was the thrilling Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) Crew battle. 6CC and Crew Cicero eagerly embraced the opportunity to showcase their multiplication prowess, facing off against other crews within the school. The TTRS Crew battle not only tested the children’s mental agility but also encouraged teamwork and camaraderie. Among these formidable crews, Crew Cicero emerged with a commendable 4th place finish, showcasing their dedication and skill in the world of numbers, with ‘arch rivals’ Crew Oliver achieving a 1st place finish.

The Cube Challenge was a captivating conundrum for the children, introduced by Dr. Katie Steckles. The challenge required the young minds to grapple with the intricacies of transforming an eight-faced net into a three-dimensional cube. This spatial puzzle not only engaged the children’s mathematical sharpness but also nurtured their problem-solving skills and perseverance. The atmosphere in the classrooms was one of focused determination as the children eagerly tackled the challenge. The challenge served as a testament to the power of hands-on, interactive learning experiences, making mathematics come alive in a way that traditional lessons might not.

Congratulations to all the NJS pupils who participated in Maths Week England. Their unwavering enthusiasm, coupled with their impressive problem-solving skills, made the week a resounding success. The celebration of mathematical prowess is not just about numbers; it is a testament to the pupils’ ability to think critically, work collaboratively, and embrace challenges with a growth mindset. A special thank you to Mr Chadwick for organising the Maths week activities. Well done to all!

‘Scaling the mountain!’ 🗻⏳💡

The Year 6 corridor has been buzzing with anticipation as their first test week kicked off on Monday. These young minds have showcased incredible resilience and resourcefulness, navigating through the challenges thrown at them in the initial days, with mountain that is maths waiting in the wings, yet to be conquered.

The energy in the classroom has been palpable: enthusiasm and determination evident. In these initial days, they’ve demonstrated outstanding qualities—tenacity, adaptability, and an unyielding drive to excel. Year 6, your efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Keep up the exceptional work!

Pins and Needles: The learning journey of creating soft toys 🪡🦥

Since the very start of their creative design journey, 6CC have shown resilience and an ability to think critically, before weaving together various sewing techniques to bring their imagination to life.

Through market research and a collective design criteria, each soft toy has emerged as a testament to their dedication and hard work. The classroom has buzzed with enthusiasm as their designs have begun to take shape, boasting a wide range of rainforest animal cuddly toys. Each stitch, every detail meticulously crafted, demonstrates the efforts and passion poured in by our young designers.

Stay tuned for the grand unveiling as we approach the completion of their fantastic final product!

Sewing Masters 🦜🦥

6CC began their second case study of learning last week and have now started to practice sewing techniques necessary to complete their rainforest animal soft toys. This morning, they practised the running stitch, back stitch, over stitch and blanket stitch.

Rainforest Stories

After reading the Kapok tree, the children have now begun planning their own rainforest stories with their own moral to boot. After discussing which features are necessary to create a captivating children’s story, 6CC started planning their own stories, including setting and characters. Keep your eyes peeled to see their work!

Roman Numeral Adventure: Halloween Edition

6CC dove in a different type of romantic numeral maths lesson this week, inspired by the spooks and chills of Halloween. The children firstly began by learning the rules of Roman numerals  by understanding the order of the capital letters, such as IX or XI. Next, they embarked on a Roman numeral tombstone treasure hunt to solve the ages of creepy Halloween characters, such as Tiny, the deceased T-Rex, and Witchy Winnifred. Pupils wanting more challenging questions were asked to solve calculations after deciphering the Roman numerals. Great effort, guys!

Sam’s Safari

Last Thursday, the students in years 5 and 6 had an exciting visit from Sam’s Safari, a mobile zoo. They learned about a fascinating array of rainforest animals, from skinks and tortoises to geckos, and even some creepy crawlies. The discussion went beyond interesting facts, delving into where these creatures live and the impact of deforestation on their habitats.

Long Multiplication Mastery! ✖️

On Wednesday, 6CC found themselves blessed as ten new teachers stepped into the class to help them master long multiplication. After studying short multiplication and applying this formal method to various problems of different representations, the next step was to grapple with long multiplication which will assist them with multiplying two or three digit numbers by two or more digits. Credit to the class as they all showed excellent teamwork, mentoring and listening skills. Awesome effort, 6CC!

Year 5/6 Football

NJS’ first tournament of the year and on this occasion, the year 5/6 boys headed to Campsmount to take part in the Leger Sport football competition. With many schools now part of the Leger model, the team faced stiff competition but played well as a collective and enjoyed the chance to compete against other schools. Also, a shout-out to Mr Hayward and Mrs Gill for accompanying the team. Well done all!

Flexible Friday!

This morning Crew Gould enjoyed a number of sweet treats for their Bake Off! Well done to everyone who made cakes for their Crew to enjoy.

Can you find the missing digits? 6CC can! 😁👍

In Maths this week, Year 6 have made it their mission to master formal methods of calculation, namely column addition and column subtraction. Putting their understanding to the test, it has been breath-taking to see these tenacious year sixes grappling with missing digit problems and applying their problem-solving/ detective skills to help find some vacant spaces in the calculations. All have worked extremely hard and some have even taken to our Year 6 Learning Site to engage with Maths at home.

Extra Study: NJS Deadly 60!

Some of our class members have produced some stunning, fact-filled presentations at home through the Year 6 Learning Site. Shoutouts to Laura, Lucy and Lucas for their Google Slides about the some of the animals that inhabit the Amazon rainforest. Awesome job!
