This afternoon years 5 and 6 were lucky enough to have the opportunity to hear the amazing Hatfield and Askern Colliery Brass Band. The band kindly visited NJS to perform a short concert of well-known brass tunes. The children were enthralled!

On Wednesday 24th May, a team of year sixes travelled to the Eco-Power stadium to take part in the Richard Bailey Memorial Play on the Pitch tournament. The team played exceptionally well, winning five out of six group games and only drawing one game – credit to the boys, no goals were conceded. Winning 16 out of a possible 18 points, the team then convincingly won their quarter final and semi final games before unfortunately losing 2-0 in the final.
Organised by Club Doncaster, it was a memorable occasion for the team to play at the stadium. Whilst the team performed brilliantly against tough opponents, especially in the latter stages of the tournament, the character of the team shone brightly throughout the competition. Well done! ⚽️👍🏼
This week, year 3 have moved through case study 1 to investigate rocks. Children given a range of different rocks to look and sort using their properties. We were also lucky to have a huge box of fossils to look at thanks to Mrs Gill.
The Second World War may feel like several lifetimes ago to some of us, but there are still thousands of people for whom it was a lived experience, something they will never forget.
Years 3 and 4 in all the Primary Schools across our Trust, have through their recent expedition Lest we Forget: How does war change Lives? examined the lives of local people and national figures – all of whom have stories that deserve to be shared.
Four beautiful books have been created, capturing times both traumatic and remarkable.
From Pat Grainger, who lives in the centre of Doncaster and remembers the Corn Exchange cellars being used as an air raid shelter, or Harry Hewitt who as a child helped the war effort by being a runner – delivering messages between the Home Guards.
The research for these books has been thorough, the original poetry and illustrations adding so much to the work that has become a valuable and treasured resource of stories from a time past, but part of our history and community.
My notes from today’s visit to @XPschool , with thanks to all of our hosts for such a warm and considered xperience, incl @gwynap @JamiePortman @SprakesA -will take some time over the weekend to reflect upon these 👇🏽 & consider the implications #learning #unlearning #compassion pic.twitter.com/9eT4BBZRai

This week NJS have been taking part in the Walk With Wildlife Five Day Walking Challenge.
As part of this, we have been using our crew time to discuss how we get to school in a morning, whether this be walking, driving or cycling. This has tied in nicely with our Wise Wednesday crew sessions over the half term, in which we have been debating the benefits of exercise and getting active outside.
We have even taken our walking challenge one step further, walking a mile around our school filed every morning during our crew sessions. We have been clocking up the steps, averaging around 1800 steps!
In January 2023, students in Year 9 studied a joint HUMAN and STEAM expedition called ‘You give me fever’ where students had to answer the guiding question:
Is Science enough to save lives?
The final product was a charity drive in order to raise money for local health charities. We did lots of school events in order to raise money for the charity chosen by each school. We conducted a sponsored walk, bake sale, PJ day, sponsored silence and a bikeathon.
For our presentation of learning, we created short flip book animations that were projected in XP East. There were zones set up outside around XPD made to look like the time periods of each case study (Black Death, Cholera Outbreak, Spanish Flu & Aids). We were dressed up in period costumes and spoke to the audience about the science and history or each case study. Students also displayed their artwork and sketchbooks to showcase the skills they had acquired this term. At the end of the PoL we presented the funds raised for equipment at NHS Doncaster.
It has been wonderful to partner with Frenchgate on this important project – we can’t thank them enough for giving our Schools the opportunity to make their own pledges and display them for all to see within the Centre.

Please don’t misunderstand this post as being boastful rather that it’s a massive appreciation to all members of our Crew these last 7 days for their successes in Accelerated Reader tests. As the screen capture shows, of the 18 tests taken by our Crew members, 17 have been passed with an astonishing average of 91.8% of questions answered correctly. These guys are absolutely flying at the minute. Keep it up!
After spending the past 5 weeks learning everything there is to know about fractions in maths, 3HJ are definitely experts, especially in adding and subtracting fractions. Children supported each other today in completing a treasure hunt with high levels of accuracy. Well done guys!
Well done everyone!
Hook week is a-go! Year 6 have enjoyed exploring the world of mining by creating their own high quality mining information posters as well as drawing some mining artefacts. The drawing and sketching we practised earlier in the year has been put to use, to great effect. Well done, guys! 👌🏼😁
