This week, Year 5 and 6 have been exploring our guiding question: How have trains been on a journey of change? We discovered who had a pivotal role in the invention of the steam engine and how these machines transformed Britain at the time. To do this, we used the protocol ‘Building Background Knowledge’ where the pupils work collaboratively in groups to share information from a key text. We learnt about George Stephenson, James Watt, Richard Trevithick and Nigel Gresley and brought our findings together as a team.

Year 6 pupil enjoyed the chance to play against rival Doncaster schools on Tuesday afternoon. The team won two games and lost two but all enjoyed the event. Great team spirit and enthusiasm on show!








📍 With Neville (me) ruining the felix felicis potion, it was 6CC’s task to filter the potion back to its original state. Through many stages of experimental filtering and sieving, all groups were able to systematically filtering out gradually smaller solids from the potion until they were left with the clearest liquid they could create. Yet again, each team demonstrated excellent problem-solving, collaborative and communication skills. Awesome effort, Crew Cicero! ✅







Here at NJS we are committed to doing our bit for the environment – whether that’s raising the profile of getting outdoors (our Y3/4 walking guide has gone to print); litter picking in our local community (the guys in these images are our chief litter pickers) or planting trees on our grounds to impact positively on the environment. Yesterday, working in partnership with J Murphy & Son’s LTD, we planted our first two saplings. On Friday the 15th October, we will be planting a further 88 trees along our perimeter fence adjacent to Campsall Balk. Making a difference – one tree at a time.

Today, 4TE solved a variety of mathematical conundrums using art sticks! We had to grapple with lots of tricky ideas but through showing some great perseverance, our Crew managed to prevail and solve the questions! Afterwards, we embarked on a treasure hunt of sorts along the school corridors solving a number of different literacy questions. It was a very busy day in 4TE and a great way to conclude a fab week!



What a fantastic way to end the week! Crew Gould and Crew Smith decided to hold a Bake Off this morning and so we had a lovely selection of homemade goods to try throughout the day. They were all so good we couldn’t choose a clear winner! We are Crew!





This year, Y3 are working with the Royal Opera House on the Chance To Dance programme. Through this programme the children will be working on the Royal Ballet Alice in Wonderland. This week the children came up with 8 beat movements that they thought expressed the different characters from the ballet. The children used their imagination to transform into the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts and Alice. They thought about how all the different would act and used this to put together small routines in the style of the Alice ballet.








Well, we do love our Flexible Friday Crew sessions here at NJS where our pupils use their voice to come up with the most interesting and exciting ideas. This week’s highlights include party games in the hall for Crew Chadwick/E Ball; fun on the Jungle trail in Crew Edwards; Blind food tasting (those yucky jelly beans) in Crew Ball and the kids have done something wonderful in Crew Gould and Smith by having their own NJS bakeoff.
