This week, Year 6 have been investigating the impact of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. Our first lesson focused on the negative aspects such as habitat loss and the impact cutting down trees has on the climate emergency. We then went on to explore why deforestation is taking place such as space for cattle farms and creating space for a growing population. The children created word art showing the negative and positive effects. We will be using what we have learnt within a class debate!
Lyricist helps us get the gist….of song writing…
As per our final product of this expedition, Geoff Hewitt paid a visit to NJS in order to help our pupils realise their songwriting potential. Here are some of the pictures that were captured during a fantastic morning….
They think it’s all over…
This week we have been becoming football superstars! We had a great time practising our skills and having a few games… Maybe we have some future stars in our midst…
The last segment!
To culminate our fractions topic, the last lesson allowed children to sink their teeth into SATs style questions whilst others consolidated their previous learning of fraction sequences. After some clear, helpful modelling on the whiteboard with some constructive critique, most were ready to hit the ground running!
E-Safety Day 2022
Crazy cartwheels!
This week in PE, cartwheels have been the focus of our gymnastics program. Starting from scratch in many cases, the children examined how experts completed the cartwheel, step-by-step, before attempting the movement by themselves. Those who felt comfortable were challenged even further my including a hurdle step prior to their cartwheel, increasing the speed and power of their movement. Top effort by all!
Songwriters of the year
This term LKS2 across the trust are coming together to record a charity single, promoting our message of caring for the planet. As part of this, each school has been tasked to write a verse of the song. NJS will be opening the song with verse 1 and today we started the process of putting everything together.
Today Y3 were joined by Geoff to help us write the lyrics for our section of the product through a songwriting workshop. We analysed music, wrote letters to the Earth expressing our feelings about climate change and then turned these thoughts and feelings into lyrics. The children shared some amazing ideas and came together to create a great verse to the song.
We can’t wait to be able to record the song, and sing our lyrics.

Sharing into equal groups
This week in our maths lessons have moved on to explore division. We have been sharing into equal groups and looking at different ways to represent calculations using counters.
Passionate about Pictionary!
Flexible Friday featured a spot of inter-crew Pictionary to end what has been an extremely busy and productive week in 6CC!
Show and tell!
This week 5EG asked to have a show and tell during our Crew time. It was fab to see children wanting to show and explain to the class what they have done, or something important to them. Speaking in front of the whole class can be quite nerve-wracking but these guys did it with no fear at all!
Staff Day – Monday 31st January
What an amazing day of CPD during our recent staff training INSET – we covered all things English, Expedition and of course, my love and passion, Mathematics. For the latter, now we are working as one leadership team across both the Infants and Juniors, we focused our work around lesson design and the key ingredients of a maths lesson. Here, working collaboratively and using classroom protocols, we unpicked the purpose of each ingredient and outlined practical examples of what that looked like in practice. In the end, we created a lesson rubric that all staff could draw upon when designing their maths lesson and ultimately impact positively on the progress of our children.
