6CC Globetrotters learn to master fractions, decimals and percentages!

In this week’s PE session, 6CC were focused on improving their passing skills and pass selection in game situations. After practising the passes in small sided games, the children began discussing and mentoring each other to make better choices when passing the ball. This culminated in the ballers applying their learning to a small sided tournament where successful passing and receiving were rewarded more than scoring!

Maths has centred around the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages this week with the children learning to convert between the three forms. In today’s lesson, they mentored each other through the conversion process before undertaking an FDP trail, which practised a variety of fraction content learnt thus far. Top effort from all in 6CC as nearly all completed their chosen difficulty whilst others grappled with tricky SATs questions to extend their learning! #MathsTalk

Smile for the camera! 📸

After a jam packed hook week of learning about cameras, reporting historic events for the news and exploring light and the human eye, year six finally began their case study on civil rights. This week, 6CC have explored equality and inequality; today, we watched Martin Luther King’s speech, ‘I have a dream’ from 1963 whilst learning about his work, achievements and beliefs.

Cameras

In their hook week, year six chose and drew their own camera based on a model. The children are especially proud of their creations which are now displayed down our corridor for all to see!

A picture speaks a thousand words

Merry Christmas and a happy new year, one and all! Year 6 are back with a bang after the Christmas holidays and have begun their hook week for the Spring expedition, ‘A picture speaks a thousand words’. This week, the children have explored the development of the camera and explored significant, iconic events that have occurred since its invention. Later in the week, 6CC will share with you pieces of art work they have completed as well as bringing the news to you. Stay tuned!

Christingle Assembly

We have had some very special assemblies across NortonCampus today. Mr Chadwick arranged forReverend Chris to visitus, and he brought with him his friend Chris. He talked to us aboutthe importance of aChristingle and what it means.

He invited us all to a special Christingle service at CampsallChurch on Christmas Eve at 4pm. During theservice we will get totake part in a Nativity, sing some Christmas carols, make our ownChristingle and we willeven be able to hear Chris’ voice (it onlyworks on Christmas Eve!)

Christmas is for sharing! 🎅🎄

This week, 6CC have stepped into Christmas with full effect and have already begun their Christmas expedition inspired by the novel and film, ‘A boy called Christmas’. After watching this Santa origin story, the children have been busy exploring characters and the language author’s use to create a vivid picture in the reader’s mind. So far, we have generated vocabulary for various fictional characters and sought to enhance our descriptions from simple words and phrases to expanded noun phrases, similes, metaphors and alliteration. Later in the week, the children will be writing their own descriptions for Matt Haig’s characters.

Christmas Scenes

To help capture the Christmas spirit, 6CC have also started work on their own Christmas scenes. So far, the children have chosen a stimulus to help them draw the outline in preparation for adding their chosen media over the next two weeks.

NJS Globetrotters!

Over the past two weeks, teams from years 3&4 and 5&6 have ventured to Campsmount to take part in Leger Sport basketball competitions. As always, the events were well organised and highly competitive with our children representing the school proudly. Whilst both teams achieved third, their team spirit, resilience (against incredibly tall opponents) and togetherness was inspiring. Well done to both teams!

Christmas Craft fun!

On Wednesday 30th, parents and carers of year 6 children were invited to take part in our annual Christmas crafts afternoon. It was lovely to welcome parents into our classroom to help our children create their own tissue paper Christmas wreaths whilst enjoying some Christmas music. Thank you to all who attended an

The Christmas Truce, 1914

This morning, 6CC were ordered to take shelter under the tables as the air raid siren boomed overhead. After spending some time building up our knowledge of all things World War I, the children imagined what it would be like to live and fight in the trenches before being introduced to famous ‘The Christmas Truce’ TV advert.

After watching the video, children planned their own stories (in first or third person) and set about generating vocabulary to enhance the descriptions and emotive language in their writing. With such great ideas and discussions surrounding how the soldiers must have felt during what is a special time of year, I look forward to seeing their finished stories!

Conclusion of the Space Story Saga!

With half term in sight, 6CC are in full space story mode. For the past three weeks, year six have been studying narrative as text type with a focus on the final frontier. Each member of our class has planned, written and critiqued their own writing along the way (along with teacher support) leading up to a week where they must independently conclude their story. As a class, we have focused heavily on getting the basic punctuation and spellings right as well as learning to adjust sentence length for purpose and effect. I have been very impressed with their descriptive language, understanding of speech punctuation and their choice of figurative language. Ace effort guys!

Fantastic Footballing Skills! ⚽️

On Wednesday 5th October, NJS sent a team of Y3/4s and Y5/6s to our first Leger Sport Competition of the year. Both teams performed excellently on the day and enjoyed the opportunity to perform against other well-coached teams in the small-sided games. Shoutout to Liam in year six for his leadership skills in helping to organise and encourage his teammates in the Y5/6 team!

Well done to all involved and thank you to the Leger Sport Staff, Campsmount and the other schools in the local area for an excellent event. May it be the first of many!

Factors of numbers!

Nearing the conclusion of our topic on place value and number in maths, this week we have been using counters to help us find factors and multiples of numbers in maths. When feeling confident enough to move their learning to a pictorial and abstract representation, the class then set about exploring common factors and multiples in separate lessons before identifying highest common factors and the lowest common multiples. A fantastic week by these enthusiastic, curious set of young mathematicians! Onto the next… ➡️
