Terrific Tessellation!

6CC began the in a creative manner, designing their own shapes to then create a repeating pattern or ‘tessellation’, inspired by the work of M. Escher – a famous dutch artist and mathematician. Over the course of the next four days, our crew will be completing their design and then combining them to create a giant tessellation consisting of uniquely different patterns!

Brilliant batting! ☀️🏏

6Cc enjoyed developing their batting skills in this week’s PE lesson. Our crew focused on mastering the basics of batting (hand and foot positioning) before learning about two particular shot types: a froward drive and a square drive. The activities were made all the more pleasant by the glorious summer weather; we finished off with two separate games of quick cricket, allowing them to put their batting skills to the test in a game situation. Top notch! 👌🏼

Pop art circulatory system!

We always look to end our weeks with a bang and what better way to conclude our week than by combining to very interesting, unrelated concepts: the circulatory system and pop artwork!

In the morning, 6CC took part in an outdoor treasure hunt to scour the school grounds for their name, function and location in the body. The children enjoyed their search in the sun before returning to class to recap their understanding of the circulatory system and its main components.

With a more artistic focus, the children then explore the works of Andy Warhol and pop artwork. The bright, contrasting colours captivated many and all were inspired to choose their favourite piece of the circulatory system and to ‘pop artify’ it!

Circulatory system pop artwork will be on show here soon!

Happy Half Term

A big Year 3 thank you goes out today to the 5 members of Year 6 that have been our helpers this week. From being classroom TAs to playing dodgeball, we have absolutely loved having them in our classes. The children have loved having them in class and they were amazing models to the younger children.

Today they teamed up with a few year 3 children to create a fabulous pairing to celebrate the Platinum’ Jubilee

Day #1 Year 6 Residential

After a reasonably short journey, Year 6 arrived at Kingswood for 3pm for their tour of the grounds and a briefing for their stay here. The first challenge that awaited them was an intimidating one for some: making their beds!

Perplexed faces, an abundance of questions and head scratching filled each room before all beds were finally made. All groups then participated in one activity before dinner; in group eight’s case, bouldering was our first official challenge of the stay.

Many greeted the news of dinner with jubilation: chicken, chips and a choice of salad followed by jam doughnuts for dessert. The children then enjoyed a briefing around one of Kingswood’s campfires.

The mini olympics was the children’s final activity of the night offering a chance for competition and humour, two of the events being an impressions race and how far can you scream before you have to take a breath!

HOWZAT!

For P.E this week, 6CC received some cricket training ahead of the second summer term. The warm up focused on heightening their alertness and reaction times ahead of a smaller game; we certainly have a high number of competitive individuals in Year 6!

Looking at developing their bowling and batting skills, the children moved onto a small, four-sided game, where all had a chance to show their stuff with a cricket ball and bat; following this, the class was then split into two teams for a class quick cricket match in the sun.

6CC’s visit to the Thackray Museum!

On Tuesday, 6CC and 6SO visited the Thackray Museum in Leeds to gain an insight into the history of healthcare in Britain. The children began their journey at ‘Disease Street’: a Victorian street showcasing the horrifically unhygienic conditions and how medical emergencies were conducted at the time – without anaesthetic and any care for cleanliness. Further into the museum, the children learned about the stories behind some of the most prolific medical inventions and discoveries from the 1800s, such as Semelweiss and Lister. Watch our video to take a trip with us!

Plenty s’more where that came from!

To celebrate completing this years SATs, 6CC took to the woodland area this morning to enjoy a very different treat. Following a safety briefing from our own outdoors expert, Mrs Blunt, each child roasted their own marshmallow under her guidance to make their very own s’more. It is no surprise the s’mores did not last long and the treat went down very well amongst the class.

Quiztastic Revision!

Our Friday in 6CC began with a bang as the class split themselves into teams to take on a Kahoot! quiz: revision edition. Each team battled it out to become the quiz master, utilising their knowledge and understanding of shape.

Magnificent mentoring!
As we prepare for SATs, the children have stepped up their efforts to mentor and listen to the feedback of their peers, particularly in Maths. As you can see below, our arithmetic pairs have been working exceptionally hard to revise previous learning and refine their maths skills. Might I add that their mentors have been doing a pretty fine job too!

Above: When learning about scale factors, the children worked hard to increase a picture of Mario or Luigi by a scale factor of two!

NOW HIRING: SATs SPAG QUESTION DESIGNERS!

SPAG revision took more of a creative focus last week as the children worked in pairs to design their own SPAG test: 8 questions with a focus of eight SPAG areas. When finished, the pairs then swapped tests with another pair and worked through their questions to see if they could achieve full marks!
