And here we have it, a selection of our finished Roman shields modelled by a selection of our fierce Roman Centurions. To create our shields, the children designed and critiqued their work before finalising their ideas before the construction phase could begin. Here, the children initially painted their shields before adding decorative wings, lightening bolts and borders out of silver and gold paper. Finally, the children used the base of used plastic bottles as the shields ‘boss’ which they painted silver. Of course, the legend that is Mrs Ball added the handles on the reverse and then our shields were complete. Indeed, there’s a little bit of work to do before they will be ship shape and ready for combat however as their self-entitled lieutenant, and of course having the added advantage of growing up on the mean streets of Rotherham, I feel more than prepared for the demands of the role.
